The 2016 Chevy Equinox made an appearance earlier this year at the Auto Show in Chicago. Since the Equinox’s launch in 2010, Chevy presented its first ever refresh to the popular compact crossover. The Equinox is a very popular vehicle for consumers, making it very important for the Chevrolet brand. With that in mind, here is a list of the top ten facts on the Equinox!

  1. The Toyota RAV4 and Honda CR-V were launched in 1994 and 1995, beginning the trend for compact crossovers. Chevy was a late runner in this car segment.
  2. In 2005, Chevy debuted the first generation Equinox as a 2005 model. There was limited popularity with this crossover as general opinions of car lovers was that it didn’t deliver what Japanese automakers had created in their models.
  3. In 2010, the second-generation Equinox was introduced; many considered this model to be significantly superior to its rivals.
  4. The Equinox marked its fifth-consecutive year of record sales with 242,242 units sold in 2014 since the launch of the second-generation vehicle.
  5. In the US and Canada, sales of the second generation Equinox, amounted to more than 1 million through the end of 2014.
  6. The Equinox was a runner up to the Chevy Silverado, being chosen as Chevrolet’s second-best selling vehicle in North America.
  7. Chevy slayed the U.S. compact SUV market in 2014 with the Equinox claiming 9.3 percent market share in 2014.
  8. There are over 1.4 million Equinox vehicles on the roads at the moment.
  9. Chevy’s Equinox has a larger exterior footprint than most crossovers, although still considered to be a compact crossover. It is expected that the next-generation D2XX-based model will have a new exterior footprint size.
  10. GM’s Theta platform was the inspiration for the first and second generation Equinox models. The Theta platform is also shared with the Chevy Captiva, Captiva Sport GMC Terrain, Saturn Vue, Opel Antara and others.
  11. The 2017 Equinox will be based off GM’s new D2XX platform, leaving the 2016 Equinox only about a year to be on the market before it gets replaced. To satisfy fleet and commercial orders, the second generation model is expected to remain in production as the Equinox Classic for at least a year or two, at which point it will be phased out completely.
